Boat Building Term Lofting






One fun fact is the origin of the term lofting. in days gone by (before computers), lofting needed to be done near the boat building effort as the builders needed to frequently check lines and measurements. because the building site was both busy and dirty, lofting the boat on the building floor was far from perfect.. Nautical terms relating to boat hulls and boatbuilding. another meaning of batten is a long flexible rod used to connect the points when you are lofting. (drawing out the boat from measurements.) the flexible batten connects the points and fills in the curve smoothly. boat building and nautical terms. nautical terms relating to sails.. Lofting time for a design will vary from a day for a single chine hull to maybe two weeks for a large and complicated round bilge hull. taken as part of the total duration of the boat building project, that is a very small proportion and certainly not worthy of compromising the final result.. A fillet is a cove shape made with putty on an inside corner. the term is most often used in reference to stitch-n-glue boat building. a fillet is made with activated epoxy resin, thickened with various fillers, to a putty consistency. the putty is "globbed" into place and smoothed with a rounded tool..
