With the advent of medium-density fiberboard (mdf) baseboards, consumers suddenly had one more choice that was dramatically cheaper and, in some ways, easier to install. but many consumers balk at the idea of installing something other than true, natural wood milled straight from the tree.. Mdf molding is a popular molding option. compared to solid wood molding, mdf molding is much less expensive. the lower price accounts for its popularity. considerations other than price are important as well when comparing the two.. Mdf – medium density fiberboard image via kronospan mdf is an engineered wood composite that is similar to particle board, but is much denser and stronger than particle board..
I agree with aaron and mark on the differences between mdf and wood but i will not write off mdf. in lower priced renovations where the only trim i would use be 4 or 6" base board then mdf will do the job just fine. if i am also using a lot of chair and crown moulding then i might consider wood.... Mdf trim or regular wood trim? discussion in 'building construction' started by j morse, mar 1, 2004. j morse guest. my builder has asked me to consinder installing mdf trim because it is aproximately half the cost. all trim will be painted. 1) is this any disadvantages to mdf? 2) is it as durable? will it dent easier?. Replaced the mdf with pine, and i just wipe it down and move on. baseboards shouldn't see the water my windows see, but mdf is soft as someone else pointed out. go pine..
